WidowPC Gaming Computers - EA Sports Gone Borg?
Here's a quick screen shot of an ad I noticed when reading about the Tour de France. It clearly shows a Madden Football ad but without any reference to Madden Football or even which newest title it is for.
My questions is this: has this empire gotten to the point where it doesn't have to mention a new title. They all seem to be reproductions of the first two or three anyway. So, perhaps they think that we, the gamers, will plunk down another $50 for anything that has the EA Sports logo on it.
Then again, perhaps they are right. Forbes just released an article (free sub) detailing EA Sports earnings for 2005.
Sales of EA Sports games made up 35% ofElectronic Arts' revenue, which rose 6% to $3.1 billion for the 2005 fiscal year ended in March. EA netted 16 cents on the sales dollar, easily eclipsing rivals Activision (10 cents) and Take 2 (7 cents).
The article quotes a 16 year old, Bryan, who's a manic gamer -- like many of us -- who foolishly admitted to the reporter that he spent $400 in the past year for seven sports video gamers from EA. $400/7 = $57. That's about right (but never admit it when a "normal" asks).
That's about what I spend on games a year. But I spread it around a bit. They spent $34 million (Forbes) just on advertising sports games last year. That's about 75% of the total budget for World of Warcraft (one of the largest ever for a PC game). It is just me or is EA Sports the Borg?
