WidowPC Gaming Computers - PAX 05 Pics and Impressions

I want to thank Gabe and Tycho and especially, Robert Khoo, for the invite to sponsor the "Free Play" computer room for PAX this year. The three members of the WidowPC Pit Crew who were there uniformly had a great time and we're definitely doing this again next year. By the way, I'm just now blogging about it because I'm only just now recovered from the weekend. Nothing like supervising gamers and participating in the gaming every night until 2AM PST which is 4AM Austin time (CST).

The Penny Arcade Expo was a real site to behold. That's why I took so many pics. I knew you guys (and gals) would want to see what it was like.

I've posted ALL of the pics (even the bad ones) at our new webshots.com page. So far, it has been the best place I have found to quickly post digital camera photos straight from the camera. I have some smaller pics of the some highlights of our weekend at PAX below. If you want to see the rest of the 100+ full screen size pics and a more of my comments on each of them you can check them out by clicking the link below:

The Penny Arcade banner hanging from the fourth floor. This was the first pic I uploaded and I didn't turn it... so turn your head sideways and you'll see the banner looking the right way.

Here's me getting interviewed by Game-TV (www.game-tv.com). They were really impressed with the computers we brought and wanted to know the story behind the company. Hopefully, we'll get a copy of the coverage and will be able to post it here on the site.

Here is what our area looked like when we finally finished setting up approximately 80 computers...over $165,000 worth of hardware all being played on by complete strangers. As you can imagine, I was paranoid all weekend that someone would walk out of the room with a nice "keep sake" from the expo. Luckily, everyone was really cool and we made it through the whole weekend without a single laptop or desktop walking away and no a single technical problem. Notably, this is the first time that laptops have been used in an official tournament. Both the Battlefield 2 and the Counter Strike: Source tournaments were held on our Sting 917 laptops and they performed absolutely flawlessly.

Here's Tycho drooling over one of our laptops early on Friday. Tycho and Gabe looked completely different than I thought they would. I went there thinking they would look reasonably similar to their cartoon images. They don't even compare. They are much cooler in person (this is not a comment on your art, Gabe...I just thought you guys were easy to talk and seemed like normal people with which can't be said for most celebrities).

Misha and I striking at pose at the WidowPC Porsche. We didn't have any presence on the first floor, which is where I thought most of the people would be. So, the sign that you can't really read on the Porsche says "Game on gaming computers as cool as this Porsche upstairs". Little did we know, that most of the people at the conference already knew about the computers on the 4th floor (it was in the conference map/info pamphlet they got when the registered) and we were swamped with people and the first floor was relatively light on people...or at least lighter than the packed 4th floor.

Here's me so involved in answering emails and helping with support tickets that I didn't even know the room was filling up around me with gamers hungry for a some WidowPC game time. I awoke out of my focused messaging to a veritable horde of gamers standing around me.

I encourage you to go check out the 100+ pics of the 2005 Penny Arcade Expo that the WidowPC Pit Crew took at http://community.webshots.com/user/widowpc and to attend the expo next year. It was a great time!
